Very frustrated at the lack of documentation regarding the file structure for Yahoo Messenger. So I played with the cache files and found that in C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Cache, the file with extension "ab.xml" can be renamed and all duplicate contact entries go away. Good luck!

You don't have to go to all that trouble just to delete.duplicate entries. You can either delete it in the view/contacts for each contact. Or you can go to contacts and delete.
