Freedom of Religion vs Womens Rights?

Young Saudi Arabian woman was murdered by her father for chatting on the social network site Facebook.

“Someone inside threw a woman onto the street,” he said. “She was lying on the road but she was still alive. A man lent out and shot a machine-gun into her body.”

There have been 48 women killed in six months for “un-Islamic behaviour”.

Freedom of Religion vs Women's Rights....when is it just murder? Why b/c it's a religious thing it's ok?

Freedom of Religion vs Womens Rights?
Basic human rights should always come before "freedom of religion".
Reply:This has nothing to do with religion and or women's rights. Rather is has everything to do with a grievance. As you can see by reading between the lines there are those who are enraged. about the Internet being allowed in the first place; had some had their way the Internet would not be allowed in the Middle East let alone Saudi Arabia; being that some regard it as a poison; some will go as far as to refer to it as a Western propaganda tool to brainwash them out of Islam or something to that effect.
Reply:This is patriarchy, and patriarchial religion, in the extreme. Obviously patriarchial religion was designed to control the population, especially women. This is that form of patriarchy pitted against the technology of the modern world. Desperate not to lose control of their women, some men will kill those women who resist control. This sends a message out to the women in that society "resist at your own peril".
Reply:No, it's not okay because it's a religious thing. That is why feminists fight for universal women's rights. People can have their religious beliefs but crimes against humanity include crimes against women-regardless of the religious belief.

The vast majority of people living in the United States for example claim to belong to a sect of Christianity. Even though the Christian bible (both Old and New Test) depict many horrid crimes-some legal at the time and some not-against women does not mean that it is okay to do it now. But in many fundamentalist countries crimes against women are still legal, or at least if they are not exactly legal, the law turns a blind eye on it. Religion is not an excuse for murder or oppression. IMHO anyway.
Reply:We should do everything we can, and I would concede to building nuclear power plants, so that we can stop being dependent on oil from the Middle East. Then we should do worldwide boycotts of their products until the stop these horrible human rights violations. International pressure brought an end to Apartheid, and it could help the women in these countries. It is just institutionalized misogyny, thinly veiled by laws that have little to do with religion and everything to do with tradition - a tradition of misogyny. It should not be tolerated.
Reply:i recently heard this said at a meeting:

"it's not cultural, it's a crime!"

the same could be said of religion.

religion, culture, norms, etc. are all used to justify violence against women.

it's a crime nonetheless (and unfortunately, in the majority of cases of violence against women, impunity will result or...the sentence will be extremely light).

yes, this is patiarchy, this is control and this is about power. yes, this does send a message of terror to every single woman out there that if they dont conform, they will pay a price. thus, every women (and her ally) will be affected by this crime. that is why it is so often done in public...so often in a humiliating way or an extremely painful way.
Reply:wow that timesonline is an extremely bias newspaper...

I was thinking about that same thing this afternoon when i was waiting for the bus, in the context of the girls in Texas, I would say that the line gets drawn when the physical well being of people who don't have the power to say no or protect themselves is in jeopardy

The same can be asked about abortion. Go ahead and give me a thumbs down. The closer I get to dying the more I refuse to allow feminist to state I have no rights speaking about abortion just because I am a man.
Reply:Your freedoms end where my body begins. "Freedom of religion" means that an individual person may practice a religion, not that he can apply his rules to other people. I have yet to see my Orthodox Jewish friends protesting outside of Red Lobster. I think we could learn a lesson there.
Reply:I respect people's freedom of religion, but if following your religion results in someone getting hurt, especially murdered, then it absolutely should not be allowed.
Reply:It's ******. They took a wrong turn hundreds of years ago and it spiraled into this nonsense.

Rio, I'll pass that on to the UN for you.
Reply:No religion should have the freedom to do anything like this. I would strongly advise the U.N. to get involved in these cases.
Reply:People do some pretty good things in the name of religion also.....

That's just horrible.
